Just extending an open invite to yinz to join myself, Adam, and Ponce on a midget ghost hunt the weekend of October 23.

Adam and I will be going up Friday after work, and he'll be staying through Sunday. Chris & Maeve will probably come and pick me up on Saturday some time.

Those of you that have been there know that it is a bit primitive. No flush toilet, bugs, snakes, etc.

Bring your own: beer, food, sleeping bag/cushion

Don't burn the place down, there is no insurance on the joint. And don't get your vehicle stuck on top of the septic tank like Ross.

Whereabouts is this place?

Is there electricity / heat ? I don't care so much I've just realized that people have different definitions of 'camping' and 'primitive'

It's in Lynn Run State Park... pretty much right on the main road through the park.  There's electricity, but no heat except for a big fireplace in the main room.  Also, no (working) indoor plumbing.. hence the need to get a bucket of water from the creek to flush the toilet.  There is a working stove and oven.  There's a little charcoal grill and a chimney.. and a large outdoor fireplace/chimney (mouseshwitz). I also left half a bottle of Old Crow in the cupboard.  That about covers the amenities.

The creek, Linn Run (not Lynn), is just across the road, so it's not a major hike to fill the bucket (but it still kinda sucks)...
Also, to add to the amenities... there are ample rocking chairs.

The shack is named Rock Run... and watch out for the big stone/concrete pillar... The Pillar People made sure we learned of that last time.

You could just fill up some empty milk jugs and take them with you before you go.

There isn't an address, but it's very easy to find. After you enter into the park, it's the last cabin on the right hand side of the road before the state park cabins, the roadside spring, or the Grove Run picnic area (pick your landmark). You see any of these places, turn around and look for the first cabin on the left.

The place has sufficient heat, with a big fireplace in the main room and a woodstove in the kitchen. There should be plenty of wood. There are various cushions and even a couple of beds/couches. You'd need sleeping bags though, as most of the bedding has been taken over by mice. We can give the park ranger a few bucks for the key to the heated shower station up the road.

Not the most child friendly place (at least while drinking is involved), as some of the rooms are in varying states of construction, and there are lots of sharp things to play with. If you wanted to bring Morgan, Nick, I'd suggest just coming up for the day on Saturday, when most of your time would be spent outdoors. It should be very scenic in the park then.

It's about a twenty minute drive into town for any supplies that might be needed.

Here's the park website:

Cool. Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning on bringing Morgan. I was actually thinking of just heading up myself probably just for Friday night. I have that Friday off (I'm going to to a concert the night before) so I could actually get some free time to spend with my family AND do something Friday night. I know you said you guys were going up after work, but aroundabouts what time? I assume its around an 1:30 drive?

Sleeping bag, pillow, beer, food, handsanitizer, TP? anything else?

North of Ligonier (About halfway between Ligonier and New Florence) there is a "Midget Camp Rd."

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Midget+Camp+Rd,+Fairfield,+Westmoreland,+Pennsylvania&sll=37.09024,-112.5&sspn=41.411029,126.5625&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FXgtaAIdoQFI-w&split=0&hq=&hnear=Midget+Camp+Rd,+Fairfield,+Westmoreland,+Pennsylvania&ll=40.340558,-79.13332&spn=0.008832,0.061798&z=15&layer=c&cbll=40.342021,-79.134953&panoid=iYKRcg17Qve8526mE1dybg&cbp=11,321.68,,0,4.91

It also appears to be where the Fairfield Twp. Municipal building is located.

I found the Midget Camp Rd. But there is an actual abandoned Midget Camp somewhere, maybe less than 2 miles hiking, off of said road. I've seen video taken from this place, with little houses and little stoves.

Well if anyone is interested in catching a ride I was gonna go down for Friday night and head back to Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon. I have Friday off, so I can leave anytime (though obviously not trying to leave until late afternoon). I wanted to try and beat some of the worst traffic (although going east on a Friday afternoon you're pretty much screwed any time after 2 PM) but I might be willing to wait for a bit until folks get off work rather than ride down by myself.

Ponce - would staying on the Turnpike until the Donegal exit be the best approach? If so, I was just probably gonna get on the turnpike in Cranberry to avoid Parkway East BS

I'm gonna probably not be able to leave tahn until about 6:30-7:00pm. If you get up there early, I'd recommend Ligonier Beach for scammin' on some townies, and The Darlington Inn for some Transylvanian vittles.

Probably not any scammin goin on, but if I do end up leaving early I was thinking of stopping somewhere for grub - is there anywhere of note along the way?
