Look.. I'd be highly remiss if I didn't point out that Bull just posted something from apartmenttherapy.com.. I'd have never believed this could have every happened back in the days when he was living in that crackhouse.
We never smoked crack in there, we only abused inhalants, and you were in on it so fuck off.

So I have a couple old two prong outlets in the house. I don't know if there is a ground wire that isn't hooked up or not since I haven't messed with them yet. But I was thinking if there isn't then instead of rewiring it all; that maybe I could install a GFCI outlet instead. It won't be grounded but the circuit should break if it spikes right? I wonder what the building codes have to say about that.

From: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/qnawiring7 GFCI receptacle will work just fine without a ground wire, so having an open ground on the receptacle will not reduce the shock protection. Be leery of using computers or other electronics on this ungrounded circuit, however. GFCI will protect people from shock, but will not protect equipment from lightning/ spike damage even with a surge protector.

Yeah but in truth most grounds don't work and nothing is really going to protect you from a lightening strike...
I could also maybe instal metal cases for the outlets and just ground the switch to that, not sure if that will actually be any better though.
I know you can do it in the bathroom and basement just not sure if you can replace an old two prong in the living room with one and still be up to code.

Yeah... if the metal cases themselves aren't grounded, that really wouldn't do shit.

I actually know the answer to this (because I got fucked by the county on one of my rentals). It's against code to replace an ungrounded outlet (2-prong) with a grounded (3-prong) outlet without doing the proper wiring work. This will require getting permits, etc. You can always make the change yourself, but it won't protect you and it's against code. The county made me go back and replace all the 3-prong outlets with 2-prongers. Sucks.

Yes but I read you can replace them with GFCI outlets as long as you write on them that they are ungorunded.

Are you sure about that, I read as long as you mark them that they are. It should be actually safe shock wise (the two prong isn't), only problem is it won't stop a surge that will ruin whatever is plugged into it. But if you install a whole house surge that shouldn't be a problem. The NEC requires you to install grounding-type receptacles on 15A and 20A branch circuits. Per Sec. 210-7, it also requires you to effectively ground the grounding contacts of those receptacles to the branch circuit equipment-grounding conductor. But, what can you do about old 2-wire nongrounding-type receptacles, where no ground exists in the outlet box?
Sec. 210-7(d)(3) permits any of the following installations when replacing a 2-wire ungrounded receptacle:
(a) Replace it with another 2-wire receptacle;
(b) Replace it with a GFCI-type receptacle and mark the receptacle with the words “No Equipment Ground;” or
(c) Replace it with a grounding-type receptacle protected by a GFCI device (circuit breaker or receptacle). Since the grounding terminals for the receptacles are not grounded, you must mark the receptacles with the words “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground” (see sidebar below).
Well the rest of the outlets are grounded so before I start planning maybe I should check them first. They might have a ground wire behind the old outlet. All the old knob and tube wiring was removed.

It's too bad that Bull's house has the old wiring removed, cause that eliminates the possibility of an electrician coming over to look at the wiring, and Bull saying "Let me show you my knob and tube."

I know Detroit is hurting and all, but holy crap is that not very much $ for this stadium. We could have probably raised that much and turned it into a huge bar / bowling alley / music venue http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/17/news/economy/silverdome_buyer/index.htm

Yeah, I was just reading that article and thought to myself it's a sad state of affairs when the average price of a house in San Francisco costs more than the Pontiac Silverdome.

Falls Church is atrociously expensive - my friend Drew lived down there and paid $2200 in rent for a two bedroom apt in this mexican slum

Is major league soccer popular enough to make this purchase worthwhile? To me the bar/bowling alley idea sounds more profitable.
