Anyone else get the latest email from StopDrinkTax.com?

Looks like some more BS from Onorato and his cronies...
Quote
While all of us living here in Allegheny County are fighting to keep our jobs in this tough economy and working hard to make ends meet, Dan Onorato and his County Council cronies have made sure that a hand-picked group of their political pals in the county bureaucracy have nothing to worry about!  In fact, they have everything to look forward to, as many saw huge salary hikes in 2008 - some more than 50%!

While Allegheny County restaurants close, servers work fewer shifts and customers take their business outside the county, Dan Onorato and County Council are overtaxing the hospitality industry and funneling the cash to political cronies in anticipation of the next election.

WTAE-TV Team 4 Investigative Reporter Jim Parsons reports that Allegheny County handed out salary hikes across the board in 2008.  Just a few examples include the Economic Development Department, where 16 employees saw pay increases of $5,000 or more and Department Director Dennis Davin's salary expanded more than 53%, from $98,000 to $150,000 in 2008!

Do you feel that our local economy developed
well enough last year to merit these salary increases?

Here are a few more irresponsible examples:

    * Former Recorder of Deeds Valerie McDonald Roberts got a 44% pay hike when her old job was reclassified as Manager of Real Estate.

    * Attorney Chuck Knoll is now making 150% more as assistant solicitor in the controller's office. His job title last year was administrative assistant.

    * A half dozen sheriff's deputies got a 66% raise, climbing from $36,000 to $61,000.

    * Assistant Director Maurice Strul got a $13,000 increase.

    * Business Development manager George Darakos' salary went up by $8,000.

    * Deputy Director Robert Hurley received a $10,000 raise.

Check out a video of Jim Parson's entire investigative report or click here for the entire Allegheny County's Payroll.

Dan Onorato and Allegheny County Council should look in their own backyard when discussing the "need for new revenue" instead of unfairly taxing Allegheny County citizens
and our hospitality industry!

THE RESULTS ARE IN
WE LOST $63 MILLION IN HOSPITALITY SALES - THANKS DAN!

Although Dan Onorato and County Council claimed that the onerous Drink Tax would not affect patronage or push business across county lines, 2008 LCB purchases by licensee's prove that they were entirely wrong!

In fact, Allegheny County had the largest decrease ever in licensee purchases from the PLCB - the government run monopoly from which we purchase wine and spirits.  Allegheny County licensee purchases declined by 4.2% for the year!   The entire state was only up .5% (less than the rate of inflation) but the five counties around Allegheny County were up by 3.4% - the highest increases in the Commonwealth!

Allegheny County lost over $63 million in hospitality sales due to the onerous Drink Tax that punishes consumers in our county while encouraging folks to either stay in or travel to a neighboring county for their family celebration, business meeting or wedding!'

Wow... apparently this didn't cause enough of a commotion to wake me up.  (You'd think that sirens or some shit would echo thru the cut)
Though, perhaps it had something to do with why my power had gone out at some point during the night.

Yeah they still had Brighton and Davis (around that intersection) closed off this morning - I had to stop by my folks house before work, proved to be a little bit of a detour

My guess is that as a result of that building being burnt out, that corner is probably only gonna get worse

It may just become an empty lot, like the corner diagonal to it (Where they tore down an abandoned building a couple of years ago)

I heard on the radio just now that Brighton is still closed.  That's gonna fuck with all the people who use the 16B (bus).
I didn't know about any of this shit until I got to work.

Yeah that other corner you mention, that used to have a few things in it - the dry cleaner that was there had a sign up telling people to come pick up their clothes for like two years after they closed (before the building was torn down)

The 16B could just go Davis->Shadeland->Schimmer (though that street maybe too steep/shitty for a bus) -> Brighton - it would skip a few stops but...

Yeah when I drove past it this morning they still had the hoses goin.

Yeah... I imagine it would pretty much do that, except cut across Woodland Ave. (like one of the other "B"'s).  I don't see a PAT bus going down Schimmer.

I suppose that also explains the water running down my street, yet it didn't look like it had rained.

Yeah, I was gonna point that out.  I think that every building that we ever lived in (or contemplated living in) as a group is doomed- that building with the Laundromat (that was Lynn's Donuts) is next.  Then that crackhouse that you and Bull lived in.  And I guess it's bad news for Norm cause Oxfield St. (aka the lab) is probably gonna blow up.

Yeah... but more than likely Norm will be the direct cause of that.  I guess it's still bad news.

that sucks, we'll see how it affects the cheapo stuff I smoke though... Havin a kid/not smoking in the house definitely cut down on the smoking as it stands, I went from buying a carton every 6-7 days (end of 2007) to buying one every 18 days or so now

You'll never understand.  The closest you could probably get to understanding would be if you were to stop drinking beer for a few days.

The question is how fucked up do you feel after not smoking for a day or two...

But I agree, it's definitely not the same.

I still remember when I flew to London with Rennie and he couldn't smoke for like 9 hours... he was pretty much out of his wig by the time we landed.  On the other hand, last that I heard (or he said) he doesn't smoke anymore and plays tennis (which is ironically very English).
