11-1 last night.. that brings the run differential down into the 70's!

I still maintain that I'll take the near-legal losing streak over the Cubs' World Series drought.. which was old enough to have sex with in 1926.
(Not to mention that the Cubs are a year or two away from starting the same rebuilding process that the Buccos are currently part of the way through.)

I'm pretty sure that the reporter who brought this up is LA's version of Bob Smizik:

"In one of those world-upside-down moments, the Los Angeles Times earlier this week quoted Logan White, the Dodgers' scouting director, as having to explain why his team is spending less than the Pirates on the draft.

He gave a passionate defense, pointing out drafts earlier in the decade that culled James Loney, Russell Martin, Matt Kemp and the Pirates' Andy LaRoche."

I might be mistaken, but Logan White was director of scouting for the Bucs under Dave Littlefield, which would actually make him pretty responsible for at least 4 or 5 of these losing seasons.

According to the Dodger's website, he's been with them for 9 years, and was with the Orioles, Padres, and Mariners before that... unless they deliberately changed his resume to leave out his stretch with Littlefield.

They should have a half price beer night. So a cup would be 4 dollars instead of 8.

They should just go back to the way things were at Forbes Field, and not sell beer at all, but allow you to BYOB.

Anyway, yeah.. you'd think they could've used a better picture of Dotel.
The entire gist of that article talks about exactly what I expected from the Pirates before the season started, and where I think they'll stay for the rest of the season now that the starting pitching has come back to normal.. decent enough starting pitching to keep you in some (but certainly not all, or even most) games, and a bullpen that can hold leads when they're given them, but practically no offense to provide any leads, let alone make up deficits.
You never know what can happen, but I think this is your 2010 Pirates.. plus the fun of having Alvarez, Tabata and maybe Lincoln make major league debuts.

Some Lebowski reference in the P-G's article on yesterday's game:

CHICAGO -- Sometimes, you get the bear. Sunday, the Cubs got you.

good read that explains why the Pirates might be wise to stick with 'at Morton n'at, and why this losing will hopefully pay off.

I forgot to post this yesterday, but I think I've reached my limit of Yinzer phone callers.  I ran out to get lunch on Sunday and they talked the whole time I was in the car about how we should trade Malkin to St Louis in return for Albert Pujols.  WTF?!?

I agree- and you see them doing that (even though they can't come out and say they're not playing for this season.. Rocco says it for them).. same thing is happening with Clement and Milledge.
The description of how Kansas City has been run and the problems with it sound a lot like the way the Pirates had been run for nearly 10 years prior to 2008.

Yeah, I made the mistake of hearing that while I was grilling on Sunday.  When those guys don't have anything to talk about, they love to stir the Yinzer pot and get more callers.

Did we give up on the other Pirates thread?

Well, apparently, the Pirates have given up on thinking the Penguins are anywhere near successful...

Google has the actual article cached if you click on the link for the story.  Entertaining stuff nonetheless.

I heard them talking about that that article on the radio.. pretty ridiculous.. and the guy who wrote it is almost named "Ladoucheski".  I'd hope that 'em Nuttings didn't actually have a hand in that being written/published.. cause that'd just be sad.

Depressing Buccos fact for the day:  Subtracting Charlie Morton's starts, the Buccos are 19-18.  Add in Charlie's 10 starts, but give him even a mediocre* record (say 3-4 with 3 no-decisions) and the record is somewhere between 25-22 and 22-25.. so law of averages says very close to .500.

*record is mediocre for the average MLB team- this record on the Buccos would be modestly to fairly successful.
