Sean- Remember when you asked me where the volcano would have been that formed oahu, well I looked into it, and there were 2 big ones that formed the island originally, the one on the eastern (windward) side where we live was called Ko'olau and if you remember the mountain range that you drove through to get out here from downtown, that's technically one mountain but they call it the Ko'olau range. Anyway, that entire line of mountain would have formed the western edge of the volcano, so that entire valley where Kailua, Kaneohe and Wainmanalo are would have been in the caldera, apparently the eastern side of the volcano fell into the ocean at some point in the last few million years due to erosion, and at it's highest it would have been 3 times higher than those mountains are now, so around 9,800 feet! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko%CA%BBolau_RangeSo now you know, and knowing is half the battle. |
