Bear with me on this, it's part rant and mostly fact.  We keep hearing that the government wants to pass a much needed $700 billion dollar bailout package or the economic situation in the United States will meltdown.  It's pretty much the use of fear to get us to go along with it.  Think of it like a Madlib, "You must do (verb) to protect (noun we care about) from (noun)".  For example, "You must pass the Patriot Act to protect American freedom from terrorists".  Except here it's "You must pass the economic bailout to protect your 401k and assets from meltdown."

That being said, I actually read the 451 page economic bailout package that Congress passed last night and found some absolute garbage that has been added to the bailout package (my personal favorite being the EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY CHILDREN).  I know the list is long (that's what she said), but it is a list of just some of the examples of what has been added to this bloated package.  If you are at all bothered by this, I suggest you contact your representatives in the House and urge them not to pass this bill.

Okay, here you go:

Things in the Bill:

SEC. 101. PURCHASES OF TROUBLED ASSETS.
AUTHORITY — The Secretary is authorized to establish the Troubled Asset Relief Program (or TARP) to purchase, and to make and fund commitments to purchase, troubled assets from any financial institution, on such terms and conditions as are determined by the Secretary, and in accordance with this Act and the policies and procedures developed and published by the Secretary.

   (A) captured by the taxpayer at a qualified facility, and
   (B) disposed of by the taxpayer in secure geological storage, and
(2) $10 per metric ton of qualified carbon dioxide which is—
   (A) captured by the taxpayer at a qualified facility, and

If I knew exactly which CERTAIN WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY CHILDREN were being referred to, I'd be better informed to make an opinion. As it stands, I will form my opinion based on whatever Governor Palin decides is best tonight.

I might just watch this to see if it meets my hilarity expectations. I mean after the Katie Couric interview I think she might be half retarded.

As long as she doesn't trip over her words tonight she'll probably be considered "the winner" insomuch as any actual debating done by Biden will be considered an attack on a baby deer.

Might I add that in the last presidential debate both candidates said they would not pass any legislation that contained "pork" or "earmarks".  However, both McCain and Obama voted in favor of this 451 page monstrosity.  McCain even went so far as to say he won't sign it and that he would make those who propose such bills "famous" by pointing out their intentions.  Good to see both candidates are men of their words...   Roll Eyes

Yeah that is a bunch of BS... Not saying its OK or right but honestly, try to find a bill in Congress in the last two decades that does not have earmarks in it.

It is a horrible situation but from my understanding, it is hard as hell to pass a bill without earmarks. Example situation - we have a "help hungry children" (Bill I), we also have

Senators A and B -  good intentioned, want to help children, but does not want to pass earmarks
AND
Senators C and D - could really care less about the children, but wants certain earmarks in the bill for their constituents (or more importantly their financial backers) to make re-election easier

All four Sens initially back the bill, with Sens C and D sneaking in some earmarks, but Sens A and B find out about the earmarks (that no one knows who put them in, which is what happens almost every time - they get added anonymously) and say they won't vote for it, and then propose a Bill II with no earmarks. Sens C and D say they won't vote for Bill II, because it isn't "comprehensive" enough (nice word for saying that they want the earmarks back), or they don't say anything at all and just vote "nay" on it. So in the long run, either Sens A and B give up and vote "yay" on Bill I or nothing gets passed at all. And I can take a safe guess that there are way more people like Sens C and D then there are people like Sens A and B

Thanks for writing this... it was real entertaining.  Also, I like to think that our government is politically incorrect enough to say 'indian' and not 'Native American' - hell, I think they should take it one step further and call it the Redman Employment Credit.

That's why I'm confused, Indians doesn't make sense to me? And if it's Native Americans they are refering to then that's really not PC at all.

I do believe that Indian is an acceptable term. The American Indian Movement uses it, and check out their Racism in Sports page.

The intent of the Indian Employment Credit is to provide businesses with an incentive to hire certain individuals who live on or near an Indian reservation.
