Sounds pretty good, even given the fact that it's us.

It's a damn shame that Mr. Michaels won't be around to record tonights show.... we've got some new shit to debut, and it would be nice to hear how it went over after the fact.

If $1.50 still has his mp3 recorder, we could plug it in to the PA.

In theory, we could do the same with any of our laptops, though the sound quality would suffer (though maybe not, as his recorder wasn't top-o-the-line, or some jounx).

Actually... if someone has a "line-in" on their laptop (as opposed to a "mic-in" it would probably sound better than $1.50's mp3 recorder... cause you could record it as an actual .wav file.

If one of your laptops will support this, it's at Ponce's house and we could easily use it to record. Just let Ponce know to bring it and a couple of extra condensor mics (like the MXL one that's in Aquarium Studio or the drum overheads).

Yeah... if someone can do it up, let me know, and we'll do it up.

Well you could record to your laptops BUT you would need a decent preamp to get a halfway-listenable recording, read up at taperssection.com and you'll find some way... Also if you're gonna use condenser mics you're better off using a pair

Or you could just scrounge together $500-600 and get an OK rig

So, we plug some mics into the Tascam, and it transfers to the computer via USB (real time?)?

... in the next 10 hours or so.

We wouldn't need a pre-amp if we went direct from the board.  If we wanted to use room mics, the Tascam would probably work well enough.  It probably wouldn't sound as good as a Jeebas recording, but we'd get a feel for how we did with the new shit (and everything else)

As I understand it... yes. (And even if it wasn't "real-time" and off by a second or so, it wouldn't really matter as long as the recordings wouldn't skip... but that would probably have more to do with the laptop than the Tascam.
If a laptop has a "line-in" jack, we would have the option of running from the board into the line in directly (no tascam).

Most laptops "line ins" are pretty crappy, from what I understand.

People using my laptop recommend something other than the line in, as it's not a priority piece of hardware for most people, so it's skimped on.

I reckon the Tascam would sound better.
It gives the option of running room mics independent of the soundboard as well. (It has phantom power if the microphones need it)

Tascam Drivers installed.  Firmware update can't be done until we plug the thing in.

As $1.50 said, we could use the drum mic overheads (I think they'll need the phantom power).... the only problem we may have is stands.  Most of our decent stands may be needed on stage.  I'll see what we got when I get home... we'll figure something out.

What about recording software?

Considering it's probably not a very big room, and we'll probably have everything panned right down the middle. It might work out best to do both, and record right from the board into right and put up a room mic for left.

Audacity? Seems to work pretty well with the built in mic of the laptop, and can record at various bitrates, n@.

I don't really want to mess w/ Garage Band.

That's probably a good option.... depending on where we put the mixer, and the other shit, if we can do that without running wires all over the place I wouldn't mind trying that.

I've never used it, but I imagine it will work fine, since we're not doing anything with it other than recording 2 tracks.

I've tried hooking an iRiver to the board for a Dvus show before, the quality wasnt that bad. But it wasnt great either. It would probly work better for YORSP since more stuff is mic'd.

Well, I suppose we'll decide once we see how the room is laid out.

Just bring the most cables that we have.

Ponce,

Maybe you should bring the MXL mic and it's shock mount. It sounds better than any of the other condensor mics (besides that Shure surface mount mic which has cable issues).

Once I get home I'm gonna check what all microphones there are.
In the black bins are 2 bags, each conatining 2 microphones (that will be needed on stage), there should be the 2 Joe Meeks (also needed on stage). Then there are the drum mics and the XML microphone we can use to try and record the show.

I'd suggest trying out the Bass Drum mic on the Bass.
